McGarlen Scholars


The McGarlen Excellence & Leadership Scholarship Program (MELSP) is a fully-funded opportunity for international students aiming to pursue higher education in the United States. This scholarship supports undergraduate, masters, and PhD students across a wide range of disciplines, helping them achieve academic excellence while fostering leadership and community impact.


Eligibility Criteria

The MELSP Scholarship is open to international students who meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a citizen of one of 90 eligible countries.
  • Applying to one of 200 eligible universities in the USA.
  • Leadership experience in previous roles (academic, professional, or civil society).
  • A proven commitment to social impact within their home country.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in high school, undergraduate, or graduate studies.


Scholarship Benefits

Recipients of the McGarlen Excellence & Leadership Scholarship may receive full or partial financial support, depending on their qualifications and application strength. Key benefits include:

1. Tuition Coverage

  • Undergraduates: Up to $20,000 per academic year (for four years).
  • Master’s Students: Up to $30,000 per academic year (for two years).
  • PhD Candidates: Up to $40,000 per academic year (for four years).

2. Additional Financial Support

  • Travel Grant: A one-time $2,000 grant for relocation to the USA.
  • Monthly Stipend: $500 per month to assist with living expenses.
  • Housing Options: On-campus accommodation or a $5,000 per year housing stipend.
  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive coverage for the entire academic program.
  • Application Fee Waiver: Covers one university application fee (or reimbursement if already paid).

3. Post-Scholarship Benefits

Upon completion, scholars gain access to the MELSP Alumni Network, offering career development, mentorship, and networking opportunities worldwide.

How To Apply

The MELSP Scholarship operates on a rolling basis, meaning applications are reviewed continuously until available funding is depleted. To maximize your chances, it is recommended to apply as early as possible.

Step 1: Choose Your Application Pathway

  • Pre-admission application: Apply for the scholarship first, then seek university admission.
  • Post-admission application: Secure admission first, then apply for the MELSP scholarship.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

Applicants must submit:

  • Proof of citizenship (passport or national ID).
  • Academic transcripts and GPA verification.
  • Statement of Purpose detailing leadership and community involvement.
  • Recommendation letters (from teachers, employers, or community leaders).
  • Proof of university application or admission (if applicable).

Step 3: Submit Your Application

  • Complete the online application form.
  • Upload all required documents.
  • Await notification of application status.


Scholarship Application Guidelines and Rules

To maintain your eligibility, recipients must:

  • Remain enrolled as full-time students.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Adhere to the university’s code of conduct.
  • Not accept multiple scholarships simultaneously.
  • Complete their program within the scholarship’s designated term.

Failure to comply may result in revocation of the scholarship and repayment of received funds.
